SERNANP is the governing body of the National System of Natural Areas Protected by the State- SINANPE. Its purpose is to conserve Peru’s vast biodiversity, as well as to bring protected natural areas closer to the population, so that all Peruvians can take advantage of the resources they provide in a sustainable manner. In this way, it contributes to the conservation of our natural heritage and the sustainable development of the national economy. SERNANP’s action ensures the conservation of the Natural Protected Areas, their biological diversity and the maintenance of their environmental services, within the framework of its participatory management and articulated to an integral policy of sustainable development of the country.

Machiguenga Communal Reserve

The Machiguenga Communal Reserve (MCR) is a Natural Protected Area co-managed by SERNANP and the Management Contract Executor ECA Maeni, with the objective of guaranteeing the conservation of flora and fauna for the benefit of the native communities of the Matsigenka, Ashaninka, Caquinte and Yine Yami peoples neighboring the NPA. It occupies the middle part of the eastern side of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range in the transition zone between the montane forests and the tropical forests, which is one of the few untouched areas in the country.
The area also has a mountainous and hilly zone covered by tropical vegetation that forms different altitudinal levels and life zones that harbor a great biological diversity with species that are only found in the MCR.
The MCR also has a great cultural diversity represented by the native populations of the Matsigenka, Ashaninka, Caquinte and YineYami ethnic groups. The inhabitants of these ethnic groups have been the guardians of the forest and its riches from ancient times to the present, preserving their customs and traditions constantly.

species

Lowland Tapir

The species is considered a priority conservation element of the MCR due to its distribution and characteristics; it is a seed disperser and an indicator of the conservation status of ecosystems. In addition, the species is a prized food resource for the populations. At the national level, the species is categorized as Near Threatened (NT) and according to the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (VU) (IUCN). The species currently has an approved monitoring protocol that will be implemented soon.
The Lowland Tapir is a resident of the Machiguenga Communal Reserve and is a species known as “Sombrilla”, this type of species protects delimited territories against the degradation of biodiversity. This mammal requires large tracts of land to subsist naturally, so it functions as a channel for the conservation of associated ecosystems: if the species is well, it will ensure that its environment is in good health. For this reason, the MCR prioritizes it as one of its conservation elements.
It is worth mentioning that it is one of the largest mammals in Latin America and they are known as engineers or gardeners of the forests, thanks to the conservation work they carry out in their habitats.
The Lowland Tapir is threatened by unregulated hunting and habitat loss and deterioration. To prevent these threats, the MCR has developed a monitoring protocol by Occupied Area and Relative Abundance, which will be implemented by SERNANP in 2023. Likewise, frequent monitoring is carried out where the presence of individuals of this species is reported by direct observation and by traces and footprints during routine patrols and by the information reported by ECA Maeni’s partner communities through communal surveillance.
